Practice †Theory Analysis Essay
During internship, I was able to witness some incidents in the educational system which is relatively important with regards to the questions of equity and fairness in schools. These reflect various policy issues that I have learned throughout the course. The most evident issue that I have encountered was regarding various forms of discrimination. Despite efforts to promote equality, some people still have their biases, and that is the common root of discrimination.            In one class that I have observed, I noticed that this certain white instructor has a bias towards his white students. This is not obvious because he is not vocal about his preferences, but it can be noticed when he asks questions to the class. As a keen observer, I noticed that he gives the easier questions to his white students, but when it comes to the hard, tricky questions, the ones which usually require analysis and in-depth knowledge, he would call on his black and Asian students. Well, it could have been okay even though they’re called to answer the hard questions, but the problem is, he would usually have his side comments when they are not able to answer.            It is not a big deal if a student wasn’t able to answer a teacher’s question or a class problem. This usually happens in any class with any race or gender. But real issue would be the comments being given by the professor. For some, it could be just a joke, but for the students, it could cause them to lose their confidence, thus affect their performance in the class. The whole class would laugh at the student, who gave an incorrect answer, thus lowering his self-esteem.            In my observation, this is a form of discrimination, as his biases towards a certain race would lead to degrading other people. His black and Asian students might loose their confidence and would feel inferior compared to their white counterparts. For me, directing the harder questions to these students would mean that they’re being unfairly treated, even though it is their responsibility to study. Also, giving side jokes and comments by the professor should not be tolerated, as it only strengthens the assumption that he is biased in his profession as a teacher.            The main issue that must be addressed in this case is about discrimination. The teacher in this case can be accused of discrimination by the students who he has allegedly discriminated. There are various forms of discrimination, but the concern in here is racial discrimination. Because of the instructor’s bias towards some of his students, he unknowingly discriminates other students. This is the issue that must be immediately resolved for this case. Another issue that must be addressed is whether or not the instructor is allowed to give side jokes about his or her students’ racial or social status. In the point of view of the involved instructor, he could be unaware that he is already discriminating other races because of his actions. It can be viewed as a joke of some sort as a sign of humor in the class. But for the students involved, they could take it as an insult or something that cold degrade their morale and self-esteem, thus greatly affecting their performance in the class. For other students, it could be seen as something humorous but would truly have an impact on how they would perceive their classmate the joke was directed upon.            There are several rules that apply in this case of racial discrimination. According to the Equality Rights, under the Constitution Act of 1982, subsection (1) states that â€Å"Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular without discrimination based on race, national or ethic origin, color, religion, sex, age, or mental or physical disability†(â€Å"Legal Digest for Ontario Educators,†2007-2008, p.4). This clearly states that what the instructor has been doing was a violation of the constitutional act of these students, as it discriminates them of their race o their ethnic origin.            In relation to the said equality rights, it is as if the instructor is denying the black and Asian students of the right to equal protection of the law. On my observations, most of his jokes and side comments are directed towards these people whenever they give incorrect answers. He is fond of doing this, which is usually taken by other students as a regular classroom humor. But if the white student incorrectly answers the relatively easy question given to them, the instructor would not make a joke or any reaction to it.            In the Part I Freedom from Discrimination of the Human Rights Code under services, it is stated that â€Å"Every person has the right to equal treatment with respect to services, goods and facilities, without discrimination because of race, ancestry, place of origin, color, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, family status, or disability†(â€Å"Legal Digest for Ontario Educators,†2007-2008, p.28). In relation to this, the instructor has clearly deviated from this, as he didn’t acknowledge the black and Asian student’s right to equal treatment with respect to the services being given. As a teacher, the service that he offers is teaching these students lessons and new information on various concerns. Because of his bias towards the white students, he is denying other students of an equal treatment in terms of the services that he offers.            In order to address this problem, we should look at it in an unbiased perspective. The concern would be on how to take care of the problem of discrimination. Every student has the right to be accommodated and to be served, and this is according to the Part IV, Boards, Duties and Powers under no.6 provide instruction and accommodation (â€Å"Legal Digest for Ontario Educators,†2007-2008, p.27) The first move is to deal with how the instructor treats his students and how he would be able to fairly give out the hard and easy questions. He needs to devise a way which he could randomly pick a student to answer a question regardless of their color or race. This could be done by drawing note cards containing the names of the students. Drawing lots would lessen the need to directly pinpoint which student answers what question.            If a legal action is to be made against the instructor, then the student should be given the support they need from the parents, and has to be given proper representation in the court of law. If he or she is under 18 years of age, he is still entitled to what should be given to a person more than 18 years old (â€Å"Legal Digest for Ontario Educators,†2007-2008, p.28). This is according to the     Accommodation of person under eighteen of the Human Rights Code.            The instructor also has to work on his habit of joking about his students, regardless of the race or class they came from. This could lead to complications like lack of interest in the subject, as well as poor performance in the class. Instead of joking about his students, he could think of similar situations and imaginary names of people to be used when he feels the need to give a joke to the class.            In this exercise, I’ve learned that people view things differently. Their perspectives could be affected by their color or race, so commenting or joking about this matter could directly affect their feelings. Which shows that smoking campaigns are working as more people are trying to quit and lot of them are succeeding. Quitting smoking will be a big help on the amount of people who are being diagnosed with lung cancer. Another lung cancer campaign is the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, they have a website which shows people about lung cancer and then how to get in contact for help; they have supporting group to find out how to cope and understanding lung cancer will help the individual find what they need. They have many fundraising and events to help raise money for treatments and to make more campaigns on risks of lung cancer and symptoms of lung cancer. The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation have many campaigns, one of them being supporting the plain packs on cigarettes as ‘’every year, another 340 000 children in the UK are tempted to try smoking’’ (http://www. roycastle. org/news-and-campaigning). They also have a campaign aimed at young people who smoke which is known as the Anti-Tobacco Youth Campaign, it is a campaign to make younger people stop smoking at a younger age as the longer a person smokes the higher the risk of cancer is. It aims at making youngsters feel strong enough not be influenced to smoke by social factors. This foundation also wrote to the prime minister, to explain the statistics that they have found about the amount of people dying each year due to lung cancer and smoking. It also says what they want the government to take action on – continue to support work raising awareness of lung cancer signs and symptoms, protect lung cancer clinical nurse specialist posts, ensure continuation of national lung cancer audit and continue to support investment in stop smoking service provision. [pic] The graph above shows that the amount of deaths from lung cancer related to smoking is dropping after in 1964 it was at its highest rates, but the rate for women dying from smoking related deaths/lung cancer is increasing whereas for men it is decreasing. For lung cancer I feel like there is a lot of campaigns that are helping to minimise cancer for example the national none smoking day ‘’ helping over 1. million smokers quit for good since 1984. And around three quarters of a million people make a quit attempt each No Smoking Day’’. (http://www. nosmokingday. org. uk/). However although all these campaigns and advertising are helping, what happens if people don’t watch the TV much as they are working most of the day then have children, they don’t pay attention to the advert s and also don’t have time to go to different events like the national no smoking day holds. Therefore I think for the future the government should have more advertising on the risks of smoking around the public for example on the windows of the local shops, so when people go in to buy their packs of cigarettes they notice the warning. Also the price of cigarettes should continue to go up, with less jobs these days if people are having to pull out more and more money they may realise cigarettes are too much and they need to spend the money on supporting their family. Sexually Transmitted Diseases Unfortunately there are not many campaigns for sexually transmitted diseases; one of the most popular ones that people know about is about chlamydia. The chlamydia campaign is the chlamydia screening campaign; it is encouraging people the age of 16-24 to get tested for chlamydia as there are no obvious symptoms for this STI. [pic] There is also a TV advert, from the health protection agency saying that how many people do you need to sleep with before you get chlamydia. I think this campaign is affective as it is confidential, all you need to do it test a number to get a test send out then you post it in – no one needs to know hat you have taken one. Because it is confidential I think more and more people will feel confident to take the test after having sex with someone. However, because this is only for 16-24 year olds this is the bad point that if you are over 24 then you cannot take the test? So what happens if someone is over the age of 24 and think they have chlamydia, ho w do they get tested and treated? The government issuing C cards which is free condoms to attempt to address STI’s. However there are competencies around this, in this case it is called Gillick competencies i. e. he person needs to be assessed as capable and knowledgeable etc. Gillick competence is a term from the law to indicate if a child under the age of 16 is able to consent their own medical treatment. Relating to contraception the Gillick came up with the decision that the prescription of contraception was a matter for the doctor’s discretion, and that they could be prescribed to under sixteen’s without parental consent. This is good as many sixteen year olds or under who are sexually active, don’t want to inform their mam or dad that they are having sex. So if they can go and get contraception without parental consent they it will be proven that more kids are having protected sex. [pic] The chart above shows that over the 4 years from 2006 to 2010 rates aren’t decreasing; in fact there are more people now with chlamydia. There also was a huge increase in those affected with syphilis; although it did decrease a little it isn’t totally decreased. This makes me believe that what the government is doing to prevent STIS and make more people have safe sex isn’t working. They need a different or bigger approach to it! There aren’t enough campaigns on sexually transmitted infections the only one that people know of is the one on chlamydia, which is not linking with gonorrhoea as the test now covers both. I think that the government need to advertise more campaigns on the TV, as there isn’t many that is scaring people of what sleeping with many sexual partners is doing to them. I think it should be more disturbing, not just the symptoms advertised there should be adverts that show what it is doing to the body especially in the long run if the infection is not treated. Acknowledged that which form of finance is better for which sector. In this course I had learnt various factors to be considered before selecting any kind of finance for funding of project. According to my experience, I could say that public organisation seeks for public finance such equity and debt and on the other hand private sectors prefer loans having a low-interest rate. The finance consists of three parts: equity, working capital and loan. For any project; we can procure funds from these three areas if needed. (Finnerty 2013,Pp.25-30). 3. Information about variety of loans. Got aware with new terms as export credit and Bilateral Aid agencies Development Loans. A large scope is available for procuring funds. Hence if your base is strong you easily get the funds as in the case of export credits and commercial loans. These kinds of loans promote business at large scale. (Timmins 2008, p. 115). 4. Extent to which lender can claim. I was surprised with the fact which came to me that all lender does not have similar benefits and appropriate analysis is essential prior to selection. The lender cannot claim over the value of assets of the project on which loan was taken. (Paravisini, Rappoport and Ravina, 2016, P.12) 5. Risk associated with finance Various factors to be considered before taking a loan. If the loan is taken in other currency as in the case of foreign loans, in that case, risk regarding fluctuation in the value of the currency is associated with the loan. This risk can be controlled by Interest rate swap method. After considering the interest rate and value of the currency proper action should be taken. (Race 2010, p. 58) 6. Not all money is required at starting of project. I had learned that the project is bifurcated in different phases. A number of funds depend on the phase of the project. I analysed during my course that one cant judge at the time of starting a project about the funds which are to be required for the project. (Faccio, Marchica and Mura, 2016, Pp. 5-7) 7. Analysis before starting project The kind of circumstances which arises before projection. The objective of the project is concluded before obtaining statutory approvals. Designing and financing are finalised after taking permission regarding project from appropriate authorities. (Finnerty 2013, Pp.25-30). 8. Operating speed as a critical factor It plays a major role in any project The success and failure of any project depend on the speed on which it is operated. If after getting approval from appropriate authorities the project is not started within a reasonable period, then, in that case, the investors and financiers who have invested their funds in the project can lose their confidence and can claim their money back. According to the study, it can be said that loan term loan with fixed interest rate is proved beneficial than other loans. A major concern should be given towards situation due to which risk of refinancing arises. Before providing loan the size of project and breakeven dates should be properly considered by the lender.
